Tahlequah Community Playhouse opens The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge

The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge

Tahlequah Community Playhouse’s production of The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge opens this week. Celebrating their 40th season, the Tahlequah Community Playhouse, is located in Tahlequah, OK, in the foothills of the Ozark mountains and smack dab in the middle of Cherokee County.

First time director Juliet Burk is at the helm of this production. She’s also the local podiatrist. Can I say she’s a chiropodist? Is a podiatrist and a chiropodist the same thing? Juliet, what’s the answer?

Anyway, I hear the actors don’t want to kill me – yet -so that’s good news.

I love hearing about productions like this. The theatre isn’t a big honkin’ LORT theatre or a commercial house in NYC. It’s a community theatre in Tahlequah, OK. It’s a group of people who all have other jobs but who love doing theatre. How fantastic is that? They do theatre simply because they love it.

And they’re doing one of my shows.

When I started writing I never imagined any theatre would produce my scripts. But I’ve had productions in Bangladesh, China, India, South Africa, and some place in the foothills of the Himalayas. I’ve had shows Off-Broadway and in theatres across the country. But there’s something about community theatre productions that really touch me. And not in a “creepy you need to register” kind of touching.

Tahlequah. Who knew?

Here’s something I found interesting about Tahlequah. The street signs and business signs are written in both the Cherokee language and English. Who knew? And it was once the capital of 19th-Century Cherokee Nation. And the Cherokee Supreme Court Building in downtown Tahlequah is the oldest public building in Oklahoma. It was constructed in 1844. Again, who knew? (Actually Wikipedia knew. Thank you Wikipedia).

Tahlequah Community Playhouse and The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge

Anyhoo, thank you to everyone at the Tahlequah Community Playhouse for choosing one of my shows. And thank you to podiatrist/chiropodist Juliet Burk for saying my characters are “witty, hilarious, and memorable.” I owe you five bucks.

The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge opens at the Tahlequah Community Playhouse November 14 and runs through November 23. Tickets are available at Abloom, Morris Cragar Flowers or the Music Room, all on Muskogee Ave.

Man I love this theatre.
