Tom Jones

The Nutshell

An adaptation of the bawdy and ground-breaking novel The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling by Henry Fielding.

The Backstory

I was commissioned to adapt the novel into a musical. I wrote the book and was biding my time waiting for Paul Mirkovich, my musical writing partner, to have some free time so we could write the music, when I thought, “Hey why not adapt the musical into a non-musical?” So that’s what I did. I’ve kept the story in the 18th century but the dialogue is a mix of period and contemporary. I think it’s a lot of fun. The size of the cast can range from nine to twenty-five. More if you need to cast everyone in town.

Reviews

“Clever, silly and highly theatrical!”

“If you feel like laughing, it’s a ride worth taking!”

“Tom Jones is good silly fun!”

“Laughs anyone? Go see FST’s Tom Jones!”

“Brown’s adaptation is a fast-paced, take-no-prisoners Monty Python-style farce.”

“Clever, lively and very funny…a thoroughly delightful farce full of delicious word-play…quintessentially theatrical.”

That’s what the Sarasota Herald, The Observer, Sarasota Magazine, Totaltheatre.com, and the Bradenton Herald had to say about the World Premiere of Tom Jones.
