The Nutshell

An adaptation of the bawdy and ground-breaking novel The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling by Henry Fielding.

The Backstory

I was commissioned to adapt the novel into a musical. I wrote the book and was biding my time waiting for Paul Mirkovich, my musical writing partner, to have some free time so we could write the music, when I thought, “Hey why not adapt the musical into a non-musical?” So that’s what I did. I’ve kept the story in the 18th century but the dialogue is a mix of period and contemporary. I think it’s a lot of fun. The size of the cast can range from nine to twenty-five. More if you need to cast everyone in town.
