The Nutshell
Phileas Fogg agrees to an outrageous wager to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. The wager puts his fortune and his life at risk. But his every step is dogged by a detective who thinks he’s a robber on the run. A whirlwind of a show as five actors portray 39 characters in a race around the world in 80 days.
The Backstory
The idea to adapt this book came to me from a friend of mine who mentioned it in passing. The entire conversation lasted about 30-seconds. I wanted to keep the cast to five actors. I thought that was a good number. It’s hell trying to get something produced with more than five actors. This play also marked the first time I wrote something without a co-writer and I was more than a tad nervous about it.
The show has been a huge hit for me. Bigger than anything I could have ever imagined. It’s been produced Off-Broadway twice, all across the US, Canada, England, South Africa, Turkey, India and Bangladesh – it’s even been produced in the Himalayas. Crazy. I never ever thought it would see the light of day, let alone be produced all over the world.
